For Families

Dover High School Family Information Update

September 13, 2017

Open House Reminder-  Open House will be held on Thursday, September 14 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  It gives parents and guardians the opportunity to go through their student’s schedule and meet their teachers.  That evening at 6:00 pm the School Counseling Department will give a presentation for the families of all freshmen from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm in the Frederick C. Walker Auditorium in which they will provide information on services the department provides to students at Dover High School.  Parents/guardians will follow a Green Day Schedule and then a White Day Schedule, getting the opportunity to meet all their student’s teachers.  Each block will be ten minutes long.  Teachers will go over expectations and curriculum.  Students filled out a schedule for parents/guardians to follow in Advisory today and a blank template is also attached that can be filled out if that schedule did not make it home.  During the evening, please visit the mezzanine where you can see some historic artifacts related to the current Dover High School, view renderings of the new school, and ask questions concerning any topic related to Dover High School.

Students interested in being nominated for a service academy through the office of United States Senator Jeanne Shaheen must have completed the application process by October 6, 2017.  Students can get more information by clicking on the “Academy Nominations” tab at http://shaheen.senate.gov.

Female students interested in applying for the Girl Scouts sponsored leadership program, “Girls Rock the Capitol” should see their school counselor for information and an application.  Applications must be submitted and received by October 30, 2017.

Picture Day has been rescheduled to Tuesday, September 19th.  The make-up/retake date is Tuesday, October 24th.

We ask that you do not stop to drop off or pick up students on Alumni Drive.  We only want students crossing the street in crosswalks.  This practice is dangerous and negatively impacts traffic flow.

Starting 9/26/17 on Tuesdays from 7-9pm at Portsmouth High School is an 8-week class presented by the Portsmouth Sail & Power Squadron, a non-profit group established in 1948 whose motto is “safe boating through education”. All ages are welcome.  Information is attached.

Repeated Information

We want to thank everyone for their cooperation during morning drop off and afternoon dismissal.  To help with the afternoon dismissal we ask that parents picking up students not back up onto Alumni Drive from A Lot and park in marked spaces if picking up in the Senior Lot.

The Football Boosters will be hosting a fundraiser at Margaritas located at 23 Members Way on Tuesday, September 19.  20% of your purchase will be donated to the Football Program.  Information and a coupon is attached to this email.

The Wentworth-Douglass Foundation is holding its annual 5 K Road Race/ 1 Mile Walk on Sunday, September 24 at 9:00 am to support the Seacoast Cancer Center.  To register or to get more information including how to form a team, please visit SeacoastCancer5K.org.  To join the Dover District team, the link is http://giving.wdhospital.com/site/TR/Events/General?team_id=1459&pg=team&fr_id=1070

First Student (Dover students) can be reached at 692-4406.

Dail Transportation, part of Student Transportation of America (Barrington and Nottingham students) can be reached at 1-800-711-5480.

Durham School Services (Student Services students) can be reached at 603-895-9664.

Transportation- Senior Parking

Information concerning the purchase of Senior Parking Passes was included in the mailing sent out on July 20, 2017.  Eligible students with properly completed paperwork and no outstanding obligations can purchase a Senior Parking Pass on the following dates between 9:00 am and 11:00 am and 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm:  August 15th, 16th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.  Senior Parking Passes may also be purchased between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm starting Monday, August 29th.  Beginning Wednesday, August 30, 2017 parking in the Senior Lot during the school day requires a valid 2017- 2018 Senior Lot Parking Permit.

Transportation- Junior Parking

Information concerning the purchase of Junior Parking Passes was included in the mailing sent out on July 20, 2017.  Eligible students with properly completed paperwork and no outstanding obligations can drop off an application for a Junior Parking Pass beginning Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 7:30 am and may continue to do so through Friday, September 8, 2017 at 3:00 pm. Parking passes for juniors will be distributed beginning Monday, September 11, 2017.  In case of the need for a lottery, students receiving a parking pass will have their names posted outside the Main Office.  It is important to note that the order in which completed Junior Applications are received does not play a role in determining who receives a parking pass if a lottery must be used.  Through Monday, September 11, 2017 juniors may park in the Bellamy Lot or the Fire Station Lot without a permit.  Beginning Tuesday, September 12, 2017 parking in the Bellamy Lot or the Fire Station Lot requires a valid 2017-201 Bellamy Lot or Fire Station Lot Parking Permit.

Transportation- Parent Drop Off

We encourage students to take the bus and car pool to alleviate traffic and delays due to the volume of traffic in the area around morning drop off and afternoon dismissal.  Our proximity to the Dover Middle School and the limited ability of the infrastructure to handle the volume of traffic present at these times makes travel through the Durham Road/Route 108 and Bellamy Road corridors difficult at best.  This situation will at times be compounded by the construction of the new school, even though every effort will be made to limit construction related travel during arrival and dismissal times.  If you are dropping your students off and/or picking them up, we ask that you use Parking Lot A (not the bus access road) in front of the school or the Alternative School Lot located down the street. We also ask you to note that both parking lots have one-way traffic patterns.  For Parking Lot A, the entrance is on the Durham Road/Route 108 end of the lot and the exit is on the Bellamy Road end of the lot.  For the Alternate School Lot, the entrance is on the Bellamy Road end of the lot and the exit is on the Durham Road/Route 108 end of the lot.

Transportation- Parking for Athletic and Other After School Events

Parking for events held at Dunaway Field and Bellamy Field is in the Bellamy Lot and the three lots located at the school:  Alternative School Lot, Senior Lot, and Parking Lot A (in front of the main building).  Please be sure to park in marked spaces only to ensure the safety of pedestrians and to allow access for emergency vehicles.  There is no access to Dunaway Field from the current high school so be sure to build in extra time to walk to events.

You will find attached to this email an aerial view of the campus to help people find appropriate parking spaces.

Sincerely,

Peter Driscoll
Dover High School Principal
